Your dental implant consultation is an important part of the process. It gives your periodontist the chance to evaluate your oral health and chart a course for success. And it gives you the chance to ask questions that will help you prepare. You don’t want to deal with something like a scheduling oversight while your mouth is still healing!

Since asking the right questions will improve your treatment experience, here are some examples you can draw inspiration from. You might think of several others as you read!

Am I A Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Before committing to the idea of dental implants, you’ll want to know if this treatment is a good fit for you. Most patients can support dental implants without issue. However, certain medical conditions or a weakened jawbone can present challenges. Rest assured, your periodontist will examine your oral health, and will likely know the answer the day of your consultation.

Given My Goals, What Will Treatment Look Like?

Very few dental treatments are one-size-fits-all. Depending on the state of your mouth and how many gaps you’re wanting to replace, your personal dental implant journey could look drastically different from others. It’s nice to be aware of what might lie ahead of you in more detail!

Can You Go Over My Treatment Schedule?

Dental implant treatments are notoriously long. If you have to take care of tooth decay or gum disease before having your implants placed, that will likely add on more time that needs to be considered. See if your periodontist can give you an estimate for each step so you can schedule accordingly.

Is The Placement In-House?

Some practices partner with local oral surgeons for dental implant placement. In this scenario, you’ll have to see the oral surgeon at a separate location to receive your implant posts. Other practices have specialists on board who can provide placement services in-office – no secondary location required. Still others focus solely on dental implants and other related treatments!

None of these are necessarily right or wrong, good or bad. But you’ll probably want to know where you’re going for your placement procedure.

How Will I Know if Something’s Wrong?

Dental implants have an astounding 95% success rate, so it’s very unlikely you’ll experience complications. However, it’s good to know what to watch out for, just in case! Your periodontist can review the symptoms that might indicate you need to schedule an appointment.

Remember that just because you have a list of questions doesn’t mean you can’t go off-script! Your dental implant consultation should be a time for you to take it slow and make sure you’re well-informed about the process. If you think of a question mid-conversation, don’t hesitate to address it. Your periodontist wants you to feel confident with your treatment, so they’ll happily provide clarification.
