It’s morning, and you’re busy brushing your teeth only to discover that your gums appear red and tender. As you look closer, you notice there is a small bump that was not there before, and your soft oral tissues are bleeding. You become panicked and worry that you may have a serious problem on your hands. While it is true that you should not disregard these symptoms, you should not immediately fear the worst. Instead, a dentist is here to explain whether it is gingivitis or gum cancer that you’re dealing with and what you can do to seek help.

What is the Difference Between Gingivitis and Gum Cancer?

Anytime there is a problem that forms in the soft oral tissues, the first assumption is that you are in the early stages of gum disease, also known as gingivitis. This typically includes symptoms of:

  • Red, swollen gums that are sensitive
  • Bleeding gums
  • A small pocket of pus that forms between the tooth and gum
  • Elongated teeth
  • Bad breath (halitosis)

Normally, when gingivitis is present, the symptoms can be reversed with regular dental cleanings and good at-home oral hygiene, as these steps can prevent the development of periodontitis – an advanced form of gum disease.

However, if you notice there are red and white patches on your gums or abnormal growths, this could be a sign of gum cancer. As a form of oral cancer, it is believed that more than 50,000 cases are diagnosed each year, and it is known to take the life of one individual each hour in the U.S.

Similar to the symptoms shown in gum disease, the major difference is that lesions or abnormal patches that do not clear up after a few weeks are likely to require a biopsy to determine if it is gum cancer. Because it can spread quickly, it is imperative that you see your dentist as soon as possible so that it can be detected early, which means a greater chance for a cure.

How Can You Prevent Symptoms from Occurring?

Minimizing your risk for gingivitis and gum cancer is important, which is why you should plan to adopt these helpful tips to keep your mouth and overall health in the best possible shape:

  • Keep your regular dental checkup and cleaning appointments with your dentist and/or periodontist to ensure no symptoms or growths are forming.
  • Seek help right away if you notice anything forming that appears out of the ordinary.
  • Stop smoking, as this increases your risk for both gum disease and oral cancer.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene at home to minimize the risk of decay, cavities, and gum disease.
  • Avoid drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.

Your gums are just as important as your teeth, so make sure that you take proper care of your oral health to ensure a healthier, longer-lasting smile.
